Korea launches futuristic smart home experience using open internet protocol

9 minute read
In order to meet these challenges, At the end of 2020, The Korea Information and Communication Technology Association (KOIT) has developed an ambitious plan in collaboration with Korea Land and Housing Company, It is a semi-governmental institution that develops and manages land and housing within cities. The plan is to create a so-called "smart home platform", It is a platform that manages the house using the Secure IP Framework for devices. The framework developed by the Open Communication Foundation can be defined as an infrastructure that enables secure connectivity for specific applications, It enables the device to be discovered, secured, installed, and communications between process elements can be managed.

Within South Korea’s orientation to the forefront of the world of innovation and smart solutions, Korea Land and Housing Company (KLS) and the Information Technology Consortium (ITC) have launched the Smart Home Platform, which provides a secure framework that uses open Internet Protocol to manage home appliances via IoT and cloud computing technologies. With the aim of improving the living experience and increasing the spread of these technologies.

After the end of the Korean War in the fifties of the last century, The economy was in a state of collapse that required a radical and systematic transformation of the country’s reconstruction. So, The Korean authorities turned to research, development and innovation that has since become the centerpiece of the life of Korean society. Its approach is based on an innovation ecosystem that fosters close collaboration between government, industry and academia in nation-building. A few decades later, Korea topped the Bloomberg Innovation Index for five consecutive years.

At the forefront of the new technologies adopted in Korea comes the Internet of Things technology used to manage homes and homes, It faces several difficulties related to safety and operation. generally These difficulties limit consumers’ choices, constitute an obstacle to market expansion, and restrict competition. Thus, As governments work to connect infrastructure, Available IoT solutions remain unable to meet their requirements.

In order to meet these challenges, At the end of 2020, The Korea Information and Communication Technology Association (KOIT) has developed an ambitious plan in collaboration with Korea Land and Housing Company, It is a semi-governmental institution that develops and manages land and housing within cities.

The plan is to create a so-called “smart home platform”, It is a platform that manages the house using the Secure IP Framework for devices. The framework developed by the Open Communication Foundation can be defined as an infrastructure that enables secure connectivity for specific applications, It enables the device to be discovered, secured, installed, and communications between process elements can be managed.

as a standard adopted by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission, This framework has been approved by international experts, It is compatible with the basic security requirements of the Internet of Things. Using cloud computing technology, The framework supports 3 connection methods, It is the communication between one device and another, And between the device and the cloud, And between one cloud and another. First, it ensures secure communication between devices over Internet Protocol networks such as Wi-Fi networks, It also allows the use of proxies in non-IP ways, such as Bluetooth, By connecting your home appliance to the cloud, It can be controlled from another home or from anywhere in the world. As for cloud-to-cloud communication, It is possible through a global cloud gateway that unites the connection between the cloud servers of different manufacturers.

An IoT smart hub will be placed in every home, This dashboard will collect and analyze big data, It is able to control 15 different types of devices through the “Smart Home” application, Regardless of the carrier, type of home appliances or products chosen by consumers, The panels will also be equipped with sensors sensitive to dust particles and carbon dioxide.

The project started with a trial period of 5,000 homes. It aims to cover 228,000 homes by 2024. To launch the action, The executive team has conducted a lot of research and experiments over the past year, In the final stages, The Korea Information and Communication Technology Association (KITC) hosted an event that brought together major manufacturers and developers of devices used in every Korean home such as LG and South Korea Telecommunications Corporation (SKT). This event was a test of the adoption of the technology, IoT cloud devices and services should be UNDAF-compliant and function properly and on a secure network, All of this must be verified before being approved and deployed in smart buildings and homes.

The technical experts were prepared to monitor any challenges they might encounter during the test, Foremost among them were challenges related to security, privacy and interoperability, It is a term often used in technical contexts to refer to the ability of different systems and institutions to work together. These challenges have been approached using the new system.

Using automation and improving air quality and energy efficiency, The innovation aims to enable residents to make the most of their homes and buildings. Improve living environments by making them safer and more sophisticated.

In addition, The Secure IP Framework for Devices will help facilitate cloud partnerships for manufacturers and reduce their need to develop different APIs. This will ultimately improve the users’ experience.

On a deeper level, This technology is the only way to move from competition led by a limited number of dominant entities to an open competition system based on uniform and fair standards. When this technique proves its usefulness, The Korean authorities expect other companies to join this trend, This will make a real difference to the whole landscape.

After planning for the future life of the Korean people, The team is also working on schemes that can be implemented in other countries, To share experiences of digitization and improve living experiences and energy efficiency, This contributes to the global effort to confront climate change.
